The first thing in this regard was of the Nehru-Gandhi family because this dynasty was their target in the entire election campaign of PM Modi. In a way, due to Modi’s sarcasm, this family became the symbol of dynasty in the country. As the first prominent face of the fourth generation of this dynasty, Congress President Rahul Gandhi contested from two parliamentary constituencies and lost the seat which was considered to be the Congress stronghold.
The meaning of Rahul Gandhi’s defeatRahul Gandhi was elected MP for three consecutive terms from Amethi Lok Sabha constituency of Uttar Pradesh, this time he lost this seat. This seat was called the Congress stronghold because former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had also been an MP from here. This time Rahul lost from here by a margin of 55 thousand 120 votes. Smriti Irani, a minister in the NDA central government, defeated her.
Already had this conclusion? This question remained in the discussion because this time Rahul had decided to contest from Amethi as well as the Wayanad seat in Kerala. And it has been believed that this result was anticipated on Amethi. But, should Rahul’s Amethi defeat be considered a victory for Smriti Irani? There is still a debate on this question.
Modi wave was the reason for the defeat of the biggest face of Congress? Or the people of Amethi disillusioned with the Gandhi family? The reasons will be searched, but the claim of Rahul’s defeat due to Iranian influence cannot be called strong at the moment.
Scindia dynasty vs dynasty theory
The whole country is aware of the political history of Scindia family in Guna and Shivpuri region of Madhya Pradesh. Presently Jyotiraditya Scindia, one of the most prominent faces of this family, lost the Lok Sabha elections from his permanent parliamentary constituency in MP. Dr. KP Yadav of BJP defeated him by more than 1.25 lakh votes. Here too is the same question whether Dr. KP Yadav did this miracle or is there something else due to the defeat of a powerful leader like Jyotiraditya, who was a four-time MP?
At the same time, Dushyant Singh, son of former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, who belongs to Scindia family, won the Jhalawar-Baran Lok Sabha seat. Dushyant was contesting on a BJP ticket. Here the theory of dynasty did not work. But, in Rajasthan itself, Congress candidate Vaibhav Gehlot, son of state Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and lost from Jodhpur Lok Sabha seat. Gehlot could not save his influential seat for his son even after putting all his strength.
Also, Bhanwar Jeetendra Singh, who belongs to the royal family, also contested on the Congress ticket and lost. And in MP, only Kamal Nath was able to save the seat for his son Nakulnath.
Candidates from prestigious families in Maharashtra
Milind Deora of Maharashtra is a special name. Along with being the president of the Mumbai Congress, Milind is the son of veteran Congress leader Murali Deora in Maharashtra. This time Milind also felt despondent in the Lok Sabha elections. Similarly, Priya Dutt, daughter of Congress leader and famous actor Sunil Dutt, also lost the election. On the other hand, in addition to Sharad Pawar’s daughter and NCP candidate Supriya Sule, former BJP veteran Pramod Mahajan’s daughter Poonam Mahajan won.
How was North India’s tableau like this?
At the same time, Sukhbir Singh Badal and his wife Harsimrat Kaur of Shiromani Akali Dal won in Punjab. Sukhbir is the son of veteran Punjab leader Prakash Singh Badal, who was one of the founders of SAD. It is also important to note that SAD is included in NDA i.e. BJP’s ally. At the same time, in Haryana, Bhupendra Singh Hooda of Congress and his son Deepender Hooda were defeated. Dushyant Chautala, who formed the Jannayak Janata Party and fought the elections together with the Aam Aadmi Party, also lost. Dushyant Devi Lal and former Haryana CM OP Chautala are the heirs of the family. In the last Lok Sabha election, Dushyant set the record of becoming the youngest MP.
Mulayam Singh and Akhilesh Yadav won only two stalwarts of the Yadav family in Uttar Pradesh. The rest ie Akshay Yadav, Shivpal Yadav, Dimple Yadav and Dharmendra Yadav lost from their respective seats. Congress candidate RPN Singh from Kushinagar Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh, who belongs to the royal family and whose father was a minister in the Indira Gandhi cabinet. However, Maneka Gandhi and her son Varun Gandhi, who belonged to the Gandhi family, won in Uttar Pradesh. At the same time, Congress leader Meera Kumar, coming from the background of political heritage in Bihar, also suffered a defeat.
If the results of Jammu and Kashmir are seen, Farooq Abdullah of the National Conference won his seat, who belongs to a well-known political family. At the same time, Congress candidate Vikramaditya Singh lost. Vikramaditya is the son of Karan Singh, a famous leader of Jammu and Kashmir and an important face of the country’s politics. Mehbooba Mufti, on the other hand, lost herself to former CM and Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, daughter of former CM of the state. Mehbooba had earlier formed an alliance with the BJP, but later both parties were separated from each other and also angry.
In Himachal Pradesh, Anurag Thakur registered a landslide victory. Modi himself rallied in his campaign, saying that if Anurag wins this time by a big margin, he will be given important responsibility. Significantly, Anurag is the son of Premkumar Dhumal, twice CM of Himachal.
And the southern aspect of dynastic theory
In the south, in Tamil Nadu, the UPA’s constituent DMK won the seat and Kanimozhi, the daughter and political heir of Karunanidhi, won his seat. In contrast, HD Deve Gowda of the Janata Dal Secular lost the election, who stood as a candidate of the UPA constituent party. Due to heavy loss to Congress in Karnataka Lok Sabha elections, it has become a challenge to save the state government in front of Deve Gowda’s son and state CM HD Kumaraswamy.
The third generation of HD Deve Gowda’s family in Karnataka was also in the fray out of which Prajwal Revanna won his seat but Nikhil Kumaraswamy was defeated. In the beginning of the election campaign, Deve Gowda was also accused of dynasty and due to these allegations, Deve Gowda’s tears and grief made headlines in the media. The Karnataka BJP called it a drama.
This picture says that the people of the country rejected familyism or dynasty but not completely. The impact of Modi’s speeches is said to be the reason for the large number of Modi’s supporters, but dynasty was attacked in this election only when the question was either from the Congress candidates or against the opponents of the BJP. The theory of opposition to dynasty did not appear to apply to BJP candidates. So, the question that the country has to consider now is that by erasing the old or established dynasty, is it necessary to create new dynasty in politics?
