Bengaluru was #blessed on Monday morning. An iridescent halo was spotted around the sun in the skies over the city. This gorgeous phenomenon is called a sun halo—it appears as a circular rainbow around the sun, and is visible during the day.
Halos around the sun are caused by the refraction or the splitting of sunlight by ice crystals in the atmosphere. Circular halos are typically produced by cirrus clouds, which are thin, patchy clouds. The clouds are formed high up in the atmosphere, at a height of over 20,000 feet.
While the exact mechanism behind the phenomenon is still to be studied, locals across the city took it as a sign of good things to come. Here are some beautiful images of the circle of light above the city.
