A Gladiator 2 sequel has been floated for 20 years, ever since the original Gladiator‘s Oscar takeover and box-office success, but will it happen? Despite the ups and downs and numerous changing story concepts, it seems that plans for Gladiator 2 are still underway. Not much is confirmed about what the sequel will be, but here is everything to know about Gladiator 2 so far.
The original Gladiator smashed the box-office in 2000, taking in over $450 million worldwide. It was beloved by fans and critics alike, gaining 12 Oscar nominations and taking home big prizes in Best Picture and the Best Actor category for star Russell Crowe. The original film was produced at DreamWorks and Universal, directed by Ridley Scott, and written by David Franzoni, John Logan, and William Nicholson. It follows Crowe’s Maximus on a quest for vengeance against sadistic Emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) that takes him to the bloody gladiator ring.

Plans for a Gladiator 2 sequel have been in the works since the first film’s huge success and have gone through different scripts and creative teams. At one early stage, Nick Cave was attached as screenwriter with a script that would see Crowe’s Maximus returning in some sort of reincarnated form to go on a fantastical romp through historical eras, on a quest to be reunited with his wife and son. Then, in November 2018, it was announced that a new concept for Gladiator 2 was being developed with writer Peter Craig (Top Gun: Maverick) and Paramount. More recently, rumors are swirling about Crowe and fellow Australian actor Chris Hemsworth, who are both starring in Thor: Love and Thunder, co-producing the sequel.
Is Gladiator 2 Still Happening?
The Gladiator 2 project with Scott attached as director and Craig as writer seems to still be in the works, though it had to be put on the back-burner while Scott focused on other directing projects such as the TV series Raised By Wolves. The sequel has Scott’s own Scott Free production company as well as Red Wagon and Parkes + MacDonald producing. In a June 2020 interview with Uproxx, producer Douglas Wick stated the chances of Gladiator 2 happening are “more than 50 percent.” As recently as March 2021, original Gladiator actress Connie Nielsen confirmed to Collider that the sequel is still “on the ledger.” It seems that, despite other projects tying up their availability, the team behind Gladiator 2 is still working on making it happen.
Gladiator 2 Release Date
As plans for Gladiator 2 keep being pushed back, nothing yet is known about an actual release date. With a film of this scale and budget, the time between pre-production and release could be years, so nobody is expecting to see the movie come out in 2021 or 2022.
Gladiator 2 Cast
One of the main challenges for Gladiator 2 is that its protagonist dies at the end of the film. Despite original plans to have Crowe’s character return, the current version of the script is thought to follow Emperor Commodus’ nephew Lucius. More recent rumors have speculated that Hemsworth may be perfect to play Maximus’ grown son, but these are complicated by the fact that in the original film Maximus’ only known son was murdered. Regardless, it seems Crowe is not in talks to return to his role in Gladiator 2
Gladiator 2 Story Details
Craig’s Gladiator 2 script is expected to take place over 20 years after the events of the original film and follow a now-grown Lucius as he takes on Maximus’ legacy. Lucius was the son of Lucilla (Nielsen), and he had a front-row seat to Maximus’ story in Gladiator. Spencer Treat Clark, who played Lucius as a child, is now grown up as well, which creates a potential clever casting choice.
