Below Deck Mediterranean‘s Captain Sandy Yawn has shared her honest thoughts after her fellow captain Glenn Shephard crashed his sailing yacht during season 2. Becoming famous for her time behind the wheel on Below Deck, Captain Sandy has earned the respect of both fans and her crew. She is skilled and friendly, and has been very open about her life, including her past struggles with alcohol addiction and her years of sobriety.
Below Deck‘s Captain Sandy managed to work her way up in what is a male-dominated profession. While she has great respect for fellow captain Lee Rosbach, she doesn’t like being compared to him. His experience coming up in the yachting world was different than hers, simply because of the gender biases that still exist in this atypical career. But Captain Sandy encourages women to follow in her footsteps, even though she warns them that their mistakes will be counted against them harsher than against their male counterparts.

Speaking to Bravo’s The Daily Dish, Captain Sandy was incredibly empathetic. “I think when you watch something, you connect with the person who has your same position, so I always connect with the captains. With Captain Glenn, when I saw him hitting the dock, I just thought, man, that could kill his entire charter season.” While Captain Sandy hasn’t crashed a boat on camera, she has had her own controversies, particularly firing Below Deck‘s Hannah Ferrier.
Below Deck‘s Captain Sandy also had advice for people who find themselves facing a mistake. “You just gotta pull it together…That’s when you talk yourself off a ledge. Just breathe and pause and take that minute.” After a brief outburst, that’s what Captain Glenn did, and he was able to handle the situation. While it’s always embarrassing to make a mistake, it’s even worse to do it in front of television cameras. Captain Glenn no doubt appreciates the words of support from Captain Sandy.
With so few people who know what it’s like to captain charter yachts on TV, the captains of the Below Deck franchise have to stick together. They are all bound to get plenty of criticism on social media merely for being in the public eye. Captain Glenn has proven himself a good captain, with some even saying he’s better than Below Deck‘s Captain Lee, and a bad day doesn’t change that. It’s especially wise of Captain Sandy to not criticize her fellow captain’s mistake knowing that, as long as she continues to appear on Below Deck Mediterranean, there’s always a chance she may make some of her own.
