Warning! Spoilers ahead for Guardians of the Galaxy #14
In the latest issue of Marvel Comics’ Guardians of the Galaxy, it’s finally explained why Doctor Doom would ever agree to team up with the group of cosmic heroes. Apparently, Doctor Doom has seen some sort of imminent threat on the horizon, and he initially believed that he alone has the power and strength necessary to stop it…provided he becomes the new King of Space first. However, in a move only the Guardians could have pulled off, Doom now has no choice but to work with the galaxy’s greatest heroes, even if he sees himself to be above them all thanks to his inflated ego.

In the most recent issue of Guardians of the Galaxy from writer Al Ewing and artist Juan Frigeri, the Guardians have become the official protectors and heroes of the cosmos, as sanctioned by the Galactic Council. In the absence of any sort of police force like the Nova Corps, the Guardians have effectively become the space version for Avengers, having an expanded roster while working alongside Super-Skrull and the Council to take care of all sorts of threats like an attack on the Kree-Skrull Throneworld.
Now, Guardians of the Galaxy #14 sees one team of Guardians dealing with an ancient Skrull cult on the planet Ego, while a second team has been dealing with the aftermath of the Throneworld attack, with Doctor Doom himself having orchestrated it to get his hands on Emperor Hulkling’s Space-Sword. While he attempted to body-swap and take over Hulkling’s body to become the new King of Space, the other Guardians managed to take advantage of Doom’s ego, convincing him to swap back to prove his power to his inferiors. However, Moondragon stepped in with her psychic abilities and sent Doom’s consciousness into Rocket Raccoon instead. Now, the Guardians have some incredible leverage, holding not only Doom’s body hostage but also holding him to his unbreakable word.
Seeing as how Rocket is now in Doom’s body and vice-versa, the Guardians do indeed have a new member added to their ranks regardless of how wild it may be. Furthermore, it’s absolutely brilliant how the Guardians managed to use Doom’s pride and ego against him, with Star-Lord, in particular, using Doom’s honor in their favor as well, making him give his word that he’ll help the Guardians stop whatever is on the way, knowing that he wouldn’t dare break it once given.
All in all, Doom having no choice but to work with the Guardians is pretty much the only logical way he’d ever do so given his personality and temperament. That being said, this new body-swap route with Rocket is certainly a hilariously surprising way to force Doom’s hand, and it’s no doubt going to be really entertaining to see how both he and Rocket adjust to their new bodies in future issues of Guardians of the Galaxy.
