Peacock might be the newest streaming service to debut, but they’ve wasted no time premiering original series that feel distinctly Peacock. One of those original shows is the comedy, Rutherford Falls. Co-created by lead stars Ed Helms, Sierra Teller Ornelas, and powerhouse creator Michael Schur, the comedy series follows Nathan (Helms) and Reagen (Ornelas), two childhood friends whose friendship is put to the test as tensions rise in their small town.

The series was released on April 22, 2021, and instantly became a hit, currently boasting a 93 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In addition to being feel-good and hilarious, the show is also extremely diverse, both on and off-screen. In fact, the show has one of the largest Indigenous writing staff in American history. With only one season, it’s a quick show to binge, leaving viewers wanting more and wondering what to watch next.

9 Trial & Error – Available On Amazon Prime Video

Like Rutherford Falls, Trial & Error takes place in an eccentric small town, with even more eccentric citizens. It’s the perfect show to binge next for fans who fell in love with the quirky town of Rutherford Falls.

The series follows Josh Segal, a New York City lawyer, who gets suckered into representing a murder suspect in the eccentric, small town of East Peck. While there, Segal works out of a taxidermy office, where he is helped by Dwanye Reed, a former clueless police offer, and Anne Flatch, a woman with several bizarre disorders.

8 Parks & Recreation – Available On Peacock

Michael Schur created shows that all have their own distinct brand of comedy, but they are all related to one another in some way, which is what makes Parks and Recreation a great show to binge next. Parks and Recreation is also one of the few shows that represents Indigenous people – though definitely not as positively as Rutherford Falls.

Shot as a mockumentary, Parks and Recreation centered on Leslie Knope and the diverse bunch of government employees she worked with. Like Nathan Rutherford, Leslie has a passion for her small town of Pawnee and would do anything for it, even when the town doesn’t love her back.

7 Ted Lasso – Available On Apple TV+

In today’s tumultuous times, everybody needs a good feel-good show to make them smile and forget their worries. Rutherford Falls is definitely one of these shows, but so is Apple TV Plus’ original series, Ted Lasso. Not to mention, Nathan and Ted have a lot in common with their blind optimism and passion.

Jason Sudeikis stars as Ted Lasso, an American football coach who gets hired to coach a professional soccer team in England. With no knowledge of the sport or the country, Lasso relies on his assistant coach and those around him for guidance, all the while keeping up his high-energy, optimistic attitude.

6 Shrill – Available On Hulu

Hulu’s Shrill might not seem like a good comparison to Rutherford Falls, but the two shows do have some shared qualities. For instance, both Annie (Aidy Bryant) on Shrill and Reagan on Rutherford Falls are young women trying to prove they belong in the worlds they find themselves in.

Shrill stars Saturday Night Live star Aidy Bryant as Annie Easton, a young journalist who is juggling her professional life with her personal life, all while trying to find confidence in herself. The series recently dropped its third and final season on Hulu and boasts a 91 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

5 Vida – Available On Hulu

Melissa Barrera and Mishel Prada in Vida

Vida might not be a comedy like Rutherford Falls, but it definitely packs the same level of heart, which makes it a perfect companion series. Not to mention, estranged sisters Lynn (Melissa Barrera) and Emma’s (Mishel Prada) complicated relationship mirrors Nathan and Reagan’s relationship, at times. Both shows also have carefully crafted writers’ rooms, with Vida’s primarily comprised of writers identifying as both women and Latinx.

This Starz original series follows two Mexican-American sisters whose lives are turned upside when their mother dies and they are forced to move back into their childhood home in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. Despite being an insanely popular series with critics and fans, the show was canceled after only three seasons.

4 The Good Place – Available On Netflix

Both The Good Place and Rutherford Falls were created by Michael Schur, giving them a familiar bond. In addition, one could say that Ted Danson’s character, Michael, and Michael Greyeyes’s character, Terry, are extremely similar, playing the all-knowing and sometimes mysterious ring leaders.

Created in 2016, The Good Place was a hit for NBC and ran for four seasons before coming to an end. The series centered on Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristin Bell), a young woman who finds herself in the afterlife known as the “Good Place,” despite living a not-so-good life.

3 Schitt’s Creek – Available On Netflix

Not only is Schitt’s Creek an amazingly hilarious, feel-good show like Rutherford Falls, but the shows also share a star. Dustin Milligan, who played Ted on Schitt’s Creek, now plays Josh Cogan on Rutherford Falls, and he’s just as sweet and romantic as he was on Schitt’s Creek.

Schitt’s Creek was a “sleeper hit” for father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, who also star in the comedy series. After the Rose family loses all their money, they are forced to move into the eccentric small town of Schitt’s Creek. And while they’re not happy about it, over the course of six seasons, the family learns just how amazing the town and each other are.

2 The Mindy Project – Available On Hulu

Mindy Kaling as Mindy in The Mindy Project

Showcasing underrepresented people isn’t the only thing The Mindy Project and Rutherford Falls have in common. In fact, both shows deal with female leads who are trying to juggle their professional and personal lives.

Inspired by her mother’s real life, Mindy Kaling created and stars in The Mindy Project, which centers on an OB/GYN who is trying to prove herself in the workplace, while also trying to find love in the real world.

1 The Office – Available On Peacock

Michael Schur isn’t the only thing The Office and Rutherford Falls have in common. In fact, more notably, the series shares an actor: Ed Helms, who oddly enough, plays a similar role in both hilarious comedies.

The Office, of course, centers on a group of employees who work at the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. Shot like a mockumentary, the series chronicles all the antics that go on when one works in a dysfunctional office setting.
