Seth Rogen Recalls Absurd Meeting With Tom Cruise & Judd Apatow

Seth Rogen speaks about the awkward time that he and Judd Apatow had with Tom Cruise when the acclaimed star offered to explain Scientology.

Seth Rogen has recalled a particularly absurd meeting between himself, Judd Apatow, and Tom Cruise. The Pineapple Express star is not exactly known for his willingness to share Hollywood gossip, but the recent release of his new book of essays, Yearbook, has resulted in some interesting tales from the life and times of one of Hollywood’s funniest stars.

As far as his own experiences go, Rogen’s life and career have been relatively controversy-free. There was, of course, that brief period in 2017 when the release of The Interview threatened to cause far bigger problems than anyone could have ever expected from one of Rogen’s comedies, but beyond that, it’s hard to pinpoint any specific incidents. This includes his well-established penchant for marijuana, which has always come off as somewhat charming to most – even back when the drug wasn’t as widely accepted as it is today. Cruise, on the other hand, seems to have a relentless list of moments that the entire world picked up on, but this all too often comes with the territory of being one of the most famous actors in the entire world. In short, Rogen’s a definite talent, but his profile isn’t what Cruise’s is.

Despite this gap in status between the two actors, Rogen has spent time with Cruise and recently told Vanity Fair about his first meeting with the star. Accompanied by Apatow, Rogen stated that the meeting occurred at Cruise’s home about 15 years ago. When the topic of Scientology came up, however, the situation quickly turned awkward, and today Rogen credits Apatow for ensuring that the controversial religion didn’t become the focus of their meeting. It all began with Cruise’s declaration of what he believed was the pharmaceutical industry’s attempts at making him look bad and ended with declining Cruise’s offer to explain the religion. Said Rogen:

I’m generally a weak-willed, weak-minded person. I would assume on the grand scale of people, if they got [Tom], what chance do I have?…Thank god Judd was like, ‘Eh, I think we’re good. Let’s just talk about movies and stuff.’

Lions for Lambs Tom Cruise

In the years since Cruise’s involvement with Scientology has become public knowledge, the religion has been through much scrutiny. Several high-profile documentaries have been made about it, and some former devotees have spoken out against the restrictive and controlling environment that comes with being a Scientologist. As for Cruise’s beliefs regarding the pharmaceutical industry, an interview he did with Matt Lauer in 2005 remains a controversial moment in his career, as he railed against psychiatry and the medicating of those who live with mental health conditions. From the sounds of it, Rogen and Apatow’s experience with Cruise took place right around this same time.

Surprisingly enough, Cruise’s devotion to Scientology doesn’t typically manifest itself in a desire to convert every last one of his celebrity pals. Mission: Impossible co-star and friend, Simon Pegg, has previously gone on record to state that Cruise has never spoken to him about Scientology. It is possible that the negative publicity the religion has received in recent years has made Cruise more selective about whom he shares his insights with and how. At any rate, Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow have resisted the apparent draw of Scientology, and Rogen isn’t afraid to talk about it.
