Ewan McGregor says that Star Wars fans may be surprised by his costume in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi show. The series, which is currently in production, picks up the exiled Jedi’s story ten years after the end of Revenge of the Sith, in the midst of his vigil over Luke Skywalker on Tatooine. Obi-Wan Kenobi also stars Hayden Christensen, Moses Ingram, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Sung Kang, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Rupert Friend, Simone Kessell, Maya Erskine, Benny Safdie, and O’Shea Jackson Jr.
In the wake of The Mandalorian’s sweeping success on Disney+, hopes are high for the quality of the Obi-Wan show. Though the prequel trilogy is one of the most divisive parts of the Star Wars canon, McGregor’s performance as Kenobi is perhaps the one part nearly all fans can agree is great. The return of Hayden Christensen in the role of Darth Vader is also intriguing, especially given Disney’s promise that the two will face off once again in a proper rematch.

Though the actor playing Obi-Wan has remained the same, his outfit apparently won’t. In a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, McGregor was asked what it felt like to get back into his old costume, and his response hinted at a curious change in Obi-Wan’s appearance. “The costume’s probably slightly different, you know, than you might expect,” McGregor said, before quickly pivoting the conversation. Of course, since a decade has passed since the character’s last appearance in Episode III, it would make sense for his outfit to have evolved a bit.
Since the new show will almost certainly see Obi-Wan leaving Tatooine, it makes sense that he’d be donning a new look in his galactic travels. The Jedi robes he sported in the prequels would draw serious attention anywhere in the galaxy – the kind of attention that could bring the Empire to his doorstep. It’s possible that Obi-Wan’s new costume will be more reminiscent of the hermit’s garb worn by Alec Guinness in the original Star Wars, marking a transition point for the character.
It’s also possible that Obi-Wan could be wearing an all-new outfit to stay incognito. The Clone Wars saw him undertake a number of undercover missions, so the character is certainly no stranger to disguises and false identities. Until more story details for the Obi-Wan Kenobi show are revealed by Disney, however, any theories about the Jedi’s new galactic mission are strictly conjecture.
