CHENNAI: The lighthouse on Marina Beach in Chennai will be lit blue on Friday, on the eve of the World Diabetes Day.

The World Health Organisation and the International Diabetes Foundation observe November 14 as the World Diabetes Day to create awareness on lifestyle diseases and related problems and complications.

Director of the Lighthouses and Lightships D Venkataraman will be the chief guest for the programme, organised by M V Hospital for Diabetes, Royapuram.

The World Diabetes Day logo is a blue circle — the global symbol for diabetes. The logo was adopted in 2007 to mark the passage of the United Nations World Diabetes Day Resolution. Across cultures, the circle symbolizes life and health. The colour blue reflects the sky that unites all nations and is the colour of the United Nations flag.

A study, which covered 26,000 individuals above the age of 20 in Chennai, showed that 20% of the subjects were diabetic. The incidence of diabetes in the city was 2% in 1970. The study found that 58% of the population above 55 years had diabetes.
