The name of the senior citizens habitat, as already christened by chief minister Mamata Banerjee, will be ‘Snehadiya’. Officials of the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) said though it would be a place for senior citizens, they are not using the term ‘old age home’.
“The condition of old age homes in many parts of the city cuts such a sorry state that these homes have become synonymous with the ‘plight’ of elderly people who have nowhere to stay and nobody to look after them. ‘Snehadiya’ will be a place for senior citizens to enjoy life after retirement. It will have all modern amenities and facilities,” officials said.
Hidco chairman-cum-managing director Debashis Sen said that the project would be unique in many aspects. “There will be more than 100 rooms and 200 beds in the habitat. One of the unique aspects of the project is that whenever one vacates a room, 75% of the price that will be paid at the time of entry will be refunded to the occupant or his or her heirs,” Sen said. The cost of food and maintenance will be charged on a monthly basis.
An official said that it would take three years to complete the project. The marketing and booking part is expected to begin in a year.
The place will also have a guest house with six rooms. “Another unique aspect of the project is that apart from a swimming pool, there will be a hydro therapy unit for the elderly people for pain and relief treatment. Those who will come to live here will become members of ‘Swapna Bhor’ senior citizens park and can use the e-health centre facility, library, games and take part in cultural activities. it will be a mini township for senior citizens. It will be a unique concept in the state,” an official said.
