Chennai: A Class 12 student leaped to her death from the fourth floor of a mall in Vadapalani on Saturday evening, police said. The reason for the suicide was yet to be ascertained. Police said she didn’t leave any suicide note.

Police, who identified the girl as Nivetha Hari of Shri Sai Nagar in Virugambakkam, said she had bunked her math tuition and went on her bicycle to the Vijaya Forum Mall on Arcot Road. She then went in a lift to the fourth floor and jumped down. Her school bag was found at the place from where she jumped off, police said. The incident took place around 6pm.

A security guard noticed her on the ground and alerted the support staff. They sent the girl to the Vijaya Health Centre next door where doctors declared her dead on arrival.

The Vadapalani police registered a case under CrPC Section 174 (unnatural death) and are investigating.

Police said the student of Balalok Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Virugambakkam was to go to her math tuition centre, 1 km from her house.

When she didn’t return home, her father Hari Kumar, a realtor, went there. He was to pick her up at 6.30pm.

“By the time Hari Kumar he reached the centre, police had recovered her bag in the mall, found the girl’s tuition teacher Suresh Kumar’s number and called him.”

“He informed Hari Kumar and they rushed to the spot,” an investigating officer said.

Later the two were called to the Vadapalani police station where Hari Kumar was informed about the demise of his daughter.

Police reviewed the CCTV camera footage of the girl entering the lift around 5.30pm.

“We are talking to her family members,” the officer said. Her parents told police she had scored 480 marks in her Class 10 annual examination and was a bold girl. She had appeared a bit depressed over the last three days, sources said.

Apart from her father, Nivetha is survived by her mother Sujatha Hari, a human resource development professional with a software company, and a younger sister.

The mall authorities declined to comment.
