Manikandan was a student at a government school in MMDA Colony in Maduravoyal. He and his mother Ganeshwari were from Sivaganga district; they moved to the city only a month ago.
Police said Ganeshwari returned home around 2pm on Sunday and found the door to the house locked from inside. She tried calling her son, but he did not respond.
She panicked and with the help of neighbours broke open the lock. They found the boy hanging from the fan in the bedroom. To avoid police inquiry, she cremated her son’s body with the help of an acquaintance on Sunday evening in a burial ground in the same locality, said police.
Police said she committed suicide by hanging herself from the same fan around 8pm on Monday. Neighbours who visited her house in the night discovered her body. They immediately alerted the police control room. Police sent the body to Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) hospital. Preliminary investigations revealed that Ganeshwari separated from her husband Dhanapal, 43, around five years ago. The couple had a girl and a boy. The girl lived with Dhanapal, while Manikandan lived with his mother.
After getting separated from her husband, an investigation officer said, the woman developed a relationship with another man in the same locality which was not liked by Manikandan, police said. “However, the duo moved to the city and Ganeshwari kept meeting her paramour secretly. On Sunday, learning that the mother had gone to meet her partner, the boy decided to end his life,” the officer said.
Ganeshwari worked as a tailor in her house and was finding it difficult to make ends meet. A case has been registered at the Maduravoyal police who are investigating the case.
