BENGALURU: Littering of plastic waste has been a major source of environment pollution at Sabarimala, a holy abode of Lord Ayyappa situated in the Periyar Tiger Reserve particularly in the month of December and January.

Keeping this in view, a program “Punyampoonkavanam” (Sacred Garden) was organised by Kerala government in Bengaluru on Sunday aimed at creating awareness among the piligrims and appealing them not to defile the place.

Speaking at the program, UB Venkatesh, president of KEONICS said the devotees should avoid carrying plastic bags during their pilgrimage.

Sudarshan Mantri, chairman of professionals cell of KPCC said about 5,000 tonnes of non-degradable waste is generated every year on account of litter by hordes of devotees and that could eventually lead to various natural calamities.
