BENGALURU: Two men were arrested for allegedly killing a senior citizen, and dumping and torching his body near Hindupur, Andhra Pradesh, last month. S Mahesh, 36, and Mohan Dushad Murali, 23, residents of Jayanagar I Block, allegedly stormed the house of Rajaram, 73, in first block, BEL Layout, near Vidyaranyapuram, north Bengaluru, on the night of November 13 last, attacked and killed him. The duo later ferried the body to Hindupur and set it afire at an isolated spot.

Rajaram was retired deputy general manager, Bharat Electronics Limited. Police initially suspected the involvement of Rajaram’s only daughter, R Madhuvanti, but let her go after questioning.Police said Madhuvanti was not on good terms with her father since the death of her mother Premalatha. Madhuvanti, an engineer, had worked in Canada and Australia, among other nations, before returning last year.

Rajaram, who owned an apartment on Bannerghatta Road, wanted to gift it to Madhuvanti. “But Madhuvanti refused to meet Rajaram, saying he didn’t take care of her mother during her last days,” police said. “She’s been cleared of any involvement,” DCP (north) T Suresh said.

Prime accused S Mahesh, who ran a grocery store near the apartment, is said to have approached Madhuvanti, saying he would help her get the original documents of the apartment from Rajaram. “Mahesh and Mohan entered Rajaram’s house with the intention of getting the documents, but killed him,” police said.

Madhumati’s cousin R Shekhar filed a complaint with Vidyaranyapuram police on November 18, saying his father had gone missing.Police circulated his photograph in the neighbouring states, following which Rajaram’s body was identified.

“We questioned Mahesh and Mohan closely , as they had spoken to Rajaram on the fateful day . Initially , both claimed innocence. On checking call records, we found both had travelled to Andhra Pradesh that night. They had no reply when asked why they had gone there without a specific reason. They were arrested,” police said.
