BELAGAVI: Three people including a BJP leader died on spot and three others were injured after their speeding car hit a roadside tree located between Bhuranaki and Golihalli villages in Khanapur taluk on Tuesday in the wee hours.

Six friends were driving towards Belagavi after visiting the pilgrimages of Udupi, Dharmasthala and Murudeshwar. The deceased have been identified as Mahesh Chandrakant Angadi of Sunadholi village in Gokak taluk, Basavaraj Magadum (42) and Sadanand Hiremath (40). Mahesh Angadi is a relative of Belagavi MP Suresh Angadi and was close to former CM BS Yeddyurappa.

Injured Shrikant Dangur, Shivamurthy Mathad and Anand Gotadaki have been admitted in private hospitals for treatment. According to preliminary investigation, reckless driving and overspeeding caused the accident.

CPI Shekharappa, BJP leaders Mallikarjun Mugali and Ashok Chalawadi, Khanapur block Congress president Mahesh Patil and secretary MM Sahukar and Bhuranaki villages reached to the spot and took out the corpses from the battered car and shifted those injured to hospital. A case has been registered at the Khanapur police station.
