Police said Raju, 29, of Kumaran Colony, Vadapalani, and his friend, Babu, 38, who lived in the same locality, bundled Aathimuthu, 47, an iron trader from Choolaimedu, into a car along with his friend Rajagopal, 43, of Nerkundram, after accosting them while they were riding a motorcycle in Choolaimedu.
Rajagopal had introduced Aathimuthu to Raju, 29, of Kumaran Colony, Vadapalani, several years ago and they entered a business partnership for a short period, a police officer said. Aathimuthu took a loan of 3.50 lakh one year ago from Raju and tried to get off without repaying the money.
Frustrated with the two men giving him the dodge and trying to cheat him, Raju decided to kidnap and threaten the iron trader. Raju and a friend, Babu, 38, took Athimuthu and Rajagopal to his house in Vadapalani where they locked them up and demanded to repay the sum.
“Raju was running short of money and couldn’t even pay a bonus to his employees this Diwali,” an investigating officer said.
Aathimuthu’s wife, in a complaint to the Choolaimedu police, said her husband had gone missing on Saturday night. Police traced Aathimuthu to Vadapalani by tracking his cellphone and rescued him and Rajagopal.
Their freedom was short-lived, however, with police arresting the pair on a complaint by Raju and booked a case against them of cheating and criminal breach of trust. Police also arrested Raju and Babu on charges of abduction. A magistrate sent all four men to prison.
