HYDERABAD: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has appointed a panel to be headed by Justice P Lakshmana Reddy, former judge of the AP High Court, to study the pollution throughout the Patancheruvu industrial area in Ranga Reddy district. An environmental activist A Kishan Rao of Patancheruvu area and advocate Kaushik N Sharma would also be on the committee besides another member and the chairman.

The tribunal gave this interim direction while hearing a petition about the pollutants being released by 250 industries in the region and the problems being faced by the people of the area. The committee was asked to study the problem and come out with suggestions to put a end to this vexatious issue. The petitioners have also brought to the notice of the tribunal how the state authorities have ignored the directions of the Supreme Court and the tribunal that had ordered them to provide safe drinking water to scores of villages affected by pollution in the area.

The effluent treatment plants being possessed by the industries, their emission levels, the way the industries are disposing their effluents etc have to be studied by the Justice Lakshmana Reddy panel which was given eight weeks to report the matter to the tribunal.
