NAVI MUMBAI: The Rabale police took custody of controversial Kannada actress Maria Susairaj and her accomplice Henry Fernandez and arrested them for allegedly cheating a developer from Airoli of Rs 30 lakh.

In October, builder Vijay Doke filed a complaint alleging that Susairaj, Fernandez and Paromita Chakraborty had accepted Rs 30 lakh from him through two cheques in December 2014 on the false assurance of helping him obtain a bank loan of Rs 2.5 crore at low interest rate.

Senior police inspector Chandrakant Katkar said, “We produced Susairaj and Fernandez before the special holiday court on Sunday. They have been remanded in police custody till November 25.”

He added that the two were arrested on Saturday by obtaining their transit remand from the Baroda police. They were in jail custody there after being arrested by the Ahmedabad crime branch for duping several Haj pilgrims of Rs 2 crore. Chakraborty is absconding.

In 2008, Maria was arrested by the Mumbai police for her involvement in the murder of Neeraj Grover, a TV producer. Grover was killed in Susairaj’s Malad flat by her former fiance, Emile Jerome Mathew, a navy lieutenant, and his body was allegedly chopped into pieces, stuffed in bags and burnt in Manor. She was found guilty of destroying evidence in the case, and not murder, and sentenced to three years’ jail. She walked out of jail in July 2011 after serving her sentence.
