MUMBAI: A 30-year-old motorist who knocked down an NRI and then rammed his car into three parked taxis near a mall in Lower Parel early on Saturday, was drunk at the time of accident, confirmed a medical report.

The injured NRI, Lucas Davis (24), has been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital. A final medical report of the accused, Anoop Pandey, is awaited.

The NM Joshi Marg police arrested Pandey (30) after they received a call informing them of the accident that took place around 5.30am. A few months ago, a lawyer, Janhavi Gadkar, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and killing two persons on the Eastern Freeway.

The police said that Pandey, a resident of Denmark Tower in Dadar, was returning home after work when the accident took place on Senapati Bapat Marg. He was reportedly speeding and hit Davis, who was crossing the road. Pandey then went on to ram his car into the taxis. Fortunately, there was no one in the taxis.

The accused has been booked under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code along with sections 134 (a) (b) and 185 (drink and drive) of Motor Vehicle Act. The police have seized the car. “The initial medical report suggests that he was drunk at the time of the accident. We are awaiting the final report to establish whether the alcohol limit in the blood was under or above the permissible limit,” said a senior police officer. If the report indicates presence of alcohol more than the permissible limit, Pandey will be booked for drunken driving too.
