NEW DELHI: An 18-year-old boy died and his friend was critically injured after their bike rammed a CISF truck in south Delhi’s Katwariya Sarai area on Saturday evening.

The victim was identified as Akash Kataria, a Class 12 student, and his friend as Gyanendra.

Akash and Gyanendra were driving on Shaheed Jeet Singh Marg when they rammed a truck that was coming from Adhichini. Police said the CISF official who was driving the truck was on duty at the time of the accident and was detained briefly for questioning.

“Both the boys were rushed to Rockland Hospital by passersby, but Kataria was declared brought dead and Gyanendra was referred to AIIMS Trauma Center. He was later shifted to Safdarjung Hospital. We have registered a case under IPC Section 279 ( rash driving or riding on a public way) and 304A (causing death by negligence). Details of the accident are being verified,” said a senior police official.

Locals have told police that the impact of the collision was such that Kataria came under the wheels of the truck and Gyanendra was thrown a few metres away and was injured badly.

“We have impounded both the vehicles. Family members of the victims have been informed. Kataria’s body was handed over to his family after postmortem. We are trying to question witnesses to determine the sequence of incident,” said another official. Kataria lived with his family in Katwariya Sarai area, while Gyanendra was from Varanasi and was pursuing his bachelors from a private university in the city, police said.
