MUMBAI: If things go to plan, you might be able to know the real-time location of BEST buses on your cellphone.
The city transport body, BEST undertaking, plans to set up a live tracking system for all its buses. This tracking system will give live updates on a phone app linked to the control room.
General manager Jagdish Patil said on Monday that BEST is in the process of creating an infrastructure through which 4,200 buses will be linked to the control room. “We can then keep a track of the movement of each bus and also on various busy routes across the island city,” he said.
This project, he said, is a precursor to the future “smart city” project.
With the bus tracking system, BEST will also be able to set up digital indicators at all stops which will display the expected time of arrival of any bus using global positioning system.
“We are also trying to introduce new technology in BEST buses in future under the smart city project which will be funded partly by the Centre and the state,” Patil told mediapersons after a committee meeting. “We also want to upgrade all buses with functional CCTV cameras.”
He added that he was keen that commuters access all information about BEST by clicking a few keys. “We will be launching a mobile app which will help you navigate through our various services,” the BEST general manager said.
